Connected at the pitch

The purpose of participating in competitive team sports is very obvious at face value. Every athlete that steps onto a field, arena or rink has the same primary objective of winning the game. Reaching this goal on a consistent basis, however, requires countless hours of practice, physical conditioning and the consistent development of each fundamental skill required to perform at a high level.

Defending champion Blizzard fueled by potent offense, veteran leadership

The Bismarck Blizzard has enjoyed quite the run of success over the past half-decade. Bismarck is coming off its second championship in as many years and its third since 2013, but, as is the case with most consistent contenders, the Blizzard are focused on the 2016-17 season and leaving its state championships in the past.

Herrmann breaks state breaststroke record again

There were a number of outstanding individual efforts during the state swimming preliminary round, but nobody shined quite like Century Patriots star Vanessa Herrmann. Herrmann, who set the 100 breaststroke state record last year with a time of 1:02.94, returned to the Bismarck Aquatic Center on Friday evening and improved on her previous mark.

Patriots set sights on 5th state title

The regular season is over, the West Region tournament has concluded, state tournament seeding has been set, and, from a technical standpoint, the Century Patriots are still undefeated. Century (12-1-2) does have strike listed in the middle column, but that 3-1 nonconference loss to Fargo Shanley way back in August could just as easily be attributed to the Patriots’ junior varsity squad.

New leaders, same old Patriots

Roster turnover exists at every level, but it is a primary concern for high school and college coaches. The impact graduation has on a team varies on a year-to-year basis, but the best programs always seem to find a way to remain consistent. Some teams rebuild, some teams reload and after reaching the state tournament for the 21st consecutive year, the Century Patriots boys soccer team undeniably fits into the latter category.

Doll leads Hazen past Ruden, Burlington

It’s a recipe to baseball success as old as the game itself, and on Friday afternoon at Dwyer Field, it cooked up a trip to the state tournament for the Hazen Post 189 Astros. Connor Doll threw seven innings of two-run baseball, Mason Faut contributed a run-scoring triple and Hazen topped the Burlington Bulldogs 3-2 to advance to the Class B West Region tournament championship game.

Going out with a bang

Throughout the entire season the Century Patriots followed the rule of playing as a team. On Friday afternoon at Dacotah Centennial Soccer Complex in Mandan, Century won a state championship as a team. The Patriots defeated the Fargo Davies Eagles 1-0 to collect their eighth state title and first since 2013.

Patriots mentally prepared for state title run

Mental preparation is key for any team with the hopes of running the table at the state tournament, and the dynamic Century Patriots are no different. In order to get ready for this week’s state tournament held at Dacotah Centennial Park Soccer Complex (Mandan), Patriots coach Nate Ulness brought his team to a “secret location” – which he refers to as “Ulness Field” – for some special training.

Patriots take aim at first team title since 2001

For 14 years the Red River Roughriders have controlled the girls state tennis tournament. After losing to the West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs 3-2 during the East Region tournament final, however, the Riders’ streak may be vulnerable this week in Grand Forks. The Century Patriots, who defeated the Williston Coyotes 4-1 in the West Region team championship last week, will enter today’s tournament with an opportunity to overthrow Red River and claim their first championship since the 2001 season.

After taking home the West Region team title this past Thursday, the Century Patriots continued to fill up the trophy case on Saturday afternoon at Capital Racquet and Fitness Center. In fact, Century did not even allow a different team a chance, as both the singles and doubles championships were made up entirely of Patriots players.
