Herrmann breaks state breaststroke record again

There were a number of outstanding individual efforts during the state swimming preliminary round, but nobody shined quite like Century Patriots star Vanessa Herrmann. Herrmann, who set the 100 breaststroke state record last year with a time of 1:02.94, returned to the Bismarck Aquatic Center on Friday evening and improved on her previous mark.

‘Sleeper’ Griemsman paces slack field

It was another wild night of professional bull riding at the Bismarck Event Center on Saturday night. Determining the champion for Saturday came down to the absolute wire, as Cooper Davis took a late lead only to have Chase Outlaw swipe the title as the second-to-last rider of the night. “It feels good,” Outlaw said.

Lockwood steals the show

There are not many second chances in professional bull riding. If a cowboys falls off his bull prior to the buzzer sounding during the opening round, it is quite likely that his night is over. This wasn’t the case on Friday night at the Bismarck Event Center, however, as 18-year-old Jess Lockwood not only received a second chance but made the most of it as well.

Patriots take aim at first team title since 2001

For 14 years the Red River Roughriders have controlled the girls state tennis tournament. After losing to the West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs 3-2 during the East Region tournament final, however, the Riders’ streak may be vulnerable this week in Grand Forks. The Century Patriots, who defeated the Williston Coyotes 4-1 in the West Region team championship last week, will enter today’s tournament with an opportunity to overthrow Red River and claim their first championship since the 2001 season.

Century claims tennis titles

After taking home the West Region team title this past Thursday, the Century Patriots continued to fill up the trophy case on Saturday afternoon at Capital Racquet and Fitness Center. In fact, Century did not even allow a different team a chance, as both the singles and doubles championships were made up entirely of Patriots players.

Meschke shines at last MAR club meet

Mandan sprinter Gabe Meschke is having himself a senior year to remember. His successful season continued May 7 at Faris Field, where Meschke earned another first-place finish in the 400 meter dash and won the most outstanding athlete award at his last MAR club meet. “It feels pretty good actually,” Meschke said.

Lindley matches own record at Denton Relays

Lindley, a senior from Watford City, matched her own triple jump record of 37-03 1/2 and also topped the field in the long jump on Friday afternoon at the Bismarck Community Bowl. “[It felt] pretty good,” Lindley said. “It’s a nice, warm day. When it’s warmer it’s definitely nicer to jump, and I’m kind of used to the wind.”.

Wilkens, Aspen Group/Comfort Inn advance to championship

After falling behind early, Aspen Group/Comfort Inn responded with an offensive explosion and equally strong defense during the second half to knock off Nomadz/Bird Industries 104-83 and advance to the Class A championship game of the North Dakota state amateur basketball state tournament. Nomadz/Bird Industries came out of the gates on fire, converting shot after shot to open up a double-digit advantage during the first half.

Securian Financial eyes long road to title

Securian Financial did not get off to the start it was hoping to at the North Dakota state amateur basketball tournament, dropping its opening-round Class A division matchup against Northern Energy Services 75-59. Shots were not falling, attempted passes were not making it through the lane and Northern Energy Services was knocking down 3-pointers with ease.

Short-handed New York tops Illinois in extras

The New York 2 men’s curling team found itself at a disadvantage when the group was forced to play with just three curlers due to an injury on Saturday at the Capital Curling Club. This didn’t stop the team made up of Martin Sather, Bill Stopera, Peter Austin and George Austin from taking home the championship trophy, however, as New York went on to defeat Illinois 4-3 in extra ends.
